Being a vegan born and raised in a small town, you wouldn't think there would be many vegan options. Surprisingly, within the past couple of years, you can practically go anywhere and spot something that's plant-based. You can find something vegan for almost any type of food, though there's some that we still don't have a ton of options for. Once we get those, I'll keep updating this post. On that note, here's a couple of our favourite spots to eat in the Hat!
OUR FAVOURITES OVERALL:
THE BEST THAI: Sabai Infusion
THE BEST SUSHI: Sushi Hiro
THE BEST CASUAL DINING: Moxie's Bar & Grill
THE BEST COFFEESHOP: Mad Hatters Roastery
THE BEST INDIAN: Blue Flame
THE BEST MEXICAN: Mucho Burrito
THE BEST PIZZA: Panago Pizza
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Thai Orchid Room, Earls Kitchen and Bar, Fatuma's Ethiopian Cafe, Izote Latin Cocina, The Kommon
Sabai Infusion
Sabai is definitely our favourite restaurant to eat at as a vegan in Medicine Hat. If you're looking for very fresh & full-bodied thai dishes, well this is definitely the place to go! Almost all of the stirfry dishes you can make vegan with Tofu or just extra Vegetables (If you can't have/don't like soy). For some of our favourite appetizers, we love their Vegetable Spring Rolls and their Tofu Summer Rolls. Taelynn's favourite dish is their Lemongrass Tofu as it's quite light but still very tasteful. On the other hand, Taryn loves their Mango Tofu with Coconut Rice as it tastes tropical with the sweetness of the Mango, but still is very savoury. We highly recommend this place, even to someone who hasn't tried Thai food, as we honestly come here 2-3 times a month & there's lots to choose from!

Thai Orchid Room
Okay, we couldn't just pick one Thai place as both in the Hat are insanely good. At Thai Orchid, you can tell they put their heart and soul into what they're making. Everytime we get a meal from here, it's always make to perfection and is very fresh. It's nice on their menu as well, as they have a Vegetarian section so it's easier to find options (which is SO HANDY). Our favourite appetizer from here are their Summer Rolls as they put mint leaves in them which is super refreshing. Taelynn's mention from here is their Vegetable Tofu Pad Thai (with NO EGG or Oyster Sauce), which is literally the best Pad Thai you can get in town. Taryn's mention is either their Cashew Tofu Stir Fry or their Tofu Peanut Curry (mild kick to it) both with Coconut Rice, as both our super delicious and full-bodied. Some of their sauces do contain Dairy or Fish/Oyster Sauce so just check with your server while ordering!

Sushi Hiro
Imagine this. You just recently went vegan, but Sushi is your favourite food and you have no clue if there's even vegan sushi. Well, Sushi Hiro will NOT disappoint you! You don't even need all that seafood and meat, as the vegetable rolls with surpass your expectations. They have lots of options here for Sushi Rolls as well as Appetizers if you're not as hungry. Some of our favourites are their Seaweed Salad, Yam Tempura Roll, and Cucumber & Avocado Roll. They also have some other options such as their Miso Soup, Edamame, Cucumber Roll, Spinach Roll and Japanese Pickle Roll. Their sushi is always rolled very full and their vegetables always taste so fresh. Out of everything, we recommend the Yam Tempura Roll as it's our favourite! Honestly, everything we've tried here is delicious though. Go try it out for yourself!

Moxies Bar & Grill
So, you're going out with a bunch of friends and they all suggest "Let's go to Moxies!". You're worried that you won't be able to have any delicious food, but you get there, and see that they have so many new vegan options! True story, this happened to us. Ever since we had it that first time, we've been back quite a bit. What I love about their menu is that they have a specific spot for Vegetarian & Plant-Based options, but they also promote each item in the other sections. It's an amazing way to promote plant-based options to everyone. They have two full-vegan items which are their Vegan Tofu Lettuce Wraps and Vegan Tacos. We both love each option so much that we'll go back to just eat them again! They're both packed with taste and you leave feeling full and energized. The tacos come with a black bean crumble, but you can sub it out for crispy tofu which is Taryn's favourite. They have a couple other vegetarian items, that I'm sure you could work around to make vegan, though these two options are definitely worth trying.

Earls Kitchen & Bar
Though Moxie's Bar & Grill is our main pick for casual dining, Earls Kitchen & Bar is another amazing option for vegan food as well. In October of 2018, they came out with a whole vegan section of their menu. I think we've tried almost everything on it and they're all super delicious! It's really handy having a whole section mapped out for us so we don't have to worry if something is "possibly vegan?" and can just order as is. Both of us have the same favourite item, which is their Vegan Quinoa + Avocado Power Bowl with crispy tofu added on top! This salad is super light, but also very nourishing as it contains a couple of superfoods! If you aren't feeling like a salad, we also recommend the Buffalo Cauliflower for something on the lighter side, and the Crispy Tofu Zen Bowl for something on the more heavy side.
Both of these options are tasty and satisfying, and you won't leave disappointed! There's a couple other options as well, which is nice if you aren't feeling like the things we mentioned! Let us know if you enjoy it.

Madhatter Coffee Roastery
Okay, when you walk into the building of Madhatter Roastery, you will literally feel like your in a different town. It's so unique and it's hard to find a gem like it. The best part about it though, is how many vegan options there are! Firstly, their drinks. There is so many options of drinks to choose from, from an Americano to Tea Latte to Cafe Latte to Iced Tea! The choices are endless, but our personal favourite is an Iced Matcha Latte with Oat Milk & Coconut Syrup (You just HAVE to try it to know). On the other hand, their food is also extremely delicious. Typically, they have about 3-5 items that are always vegan! A couple of our favourites that they've carried before are their Banana Bread, Peanut Butter Brownies and a No-Bake Chocolate Vegan Cheesecake! They are always switching it up though, so you can always try something new! This is definitely our go-to cafe in the hat, and the staff is always so welcoming and warming so we recommend trying it out.

Blue Flame - East Indian Cuisine
If you are looking for some good East Indian food, Blume Flame has some great vegan options in Medicine Hat. On their menu they clarify which items are vegetarian and dairy-free. Some of our favourite appetizers are the Vegetable Samosas and Vegetable Pakoras (like a fried fritter), which are both traditional, fried dishes. Taelynn's only tried the Pakora's before, but I'm sure both would be super delicious! In regards to mains, our favourites are the Aloo Gobi and Vegetable Curry. The Aloo Gobi contains potato and cauliflower mixed with an onion-tomato based sauce, which is definitely one too try out! On the other hand, the Vegetable Curry is a mix of vegetables tossed in a thick onion sauce which is a little heavier but is worth it. They have lots of different vegetarian/vegan options and you can always ask to make sure everything is vegan! We recommend trying this place out!

Mucho Burrito
If you're feeling like getting something fast, we recommend checking out Mucho Burrito! This is definitely our go-to place for any type of mexican food as they have lots of options and you have the option to choose what you want in your food. Both their taco shells and tortillas are vegan so you can choose from any of those, or make a bowl. As for "meat", they carry the beyond crumble which we typically add to our burritos, but they also have chipotle black beans or pinto beans for some extra protein. Almost all of their toppings are vegan, aside from two types of cheeses, which is awesome as there's a ton you can choose from! There's a couple sauces and/or dressings that are vegan, such as their Pico de Gallo, Salsa's, Chili Mango Sauce, Caramelized Pineapple & Jalapeño Sauce, and House-Made Cilantro & Lime Chimichurri. We love coming here for food as it's quick but will stuff you up.

Panago Pizza
If you're feeling like eating some pizza, we recommend checking out Panago Pizza for their vegan options. First off, their website is so easy to work around, as they have a full section labelled for us plant-based eaters. As an appetizer, you can get their 10pc Gardein Chicken Tenders that come with a vegan mustard dip. If you've been vegan for a while you've probably tried Gardein products, as they are one of the best substitute meat brands. And they don't disappoint here! Though, if you're looking for something you can't easily make at home, you better try their pizza's. They have a couple of options that are pre-picked, as well as a create-your-own option. I've tried most of the pre-picked pizzas, and my favourite would be the Plant-Based Mediterranean. Though, I normally create my own pizza with: Barbeque Sauce base, Plant-Based Beyond Crumble, Spinach, Sun-dried Tomatoes, Pineapple, and sometimes Daiya Cheese. I know. It may sound super weird, but I can promise you it's DELICIOUS! If you feel up to it, I would say to try it out. Honestly, most of the toppings are vegan so have fun creating your own. They don't cheap out with the toppings either!

Fatuma's Ethiopian Cafe
Okay, this place is SUCH a hidden gem. When they first opened up, I kept seeing her posts on Facebook about her vegan option and knew I had to try it out. And oh my goodness, it's the cutest little place ever! The decorations are beautiful, and you're filled with the most positive energy when you walk in. The owner is so kind and you can tell she puts her heart and soul into everything she makes! It's so lovely supporting local, especially when they're first starting up. Whenever we go, we get her vegan platter which you can get with Naan bread or Injera bread (most times). The toppings switch depending on the season, but they've contained of yellow cabbage, lentils, potatoes (yellow and sweet), kale, and mushrooms! She's always switching it up though, so you can always get something a little different depending on the season. Her food is so filling, and also very cost effective. Please, I ask of you to go give it a try and you'll always want to go back!

Izote Latin Cocina
Talking about little gems, Izote Latin Cocina is also one of them. When my family went there for the first time, we weren't expecting to be able to eat much. After talking with the owner, she gave us lots of options to choose from, in which we ordered everything we could! The owner was so understanding and wanted to make sure we knew everything was safe to eat, which is amazing to have. On the other hand, the food is so delicious and fresh! We had a couple favourites which were their Yuca Fries as an appetizer and their Pupusas (refried beans). I constantly crave their Yuca fries as I've never had anything like it! They're almost like a sweet potato, but less heavy. The pupusas were so delicious, and definitely kept us full for the rest of the night. You will not regret trying out Izote, as everything was so tasty and full-bodied.

The Kommon
The Kommon is genuinely one of the coolest places to check out in the Medicine Hat. The atmosphere is so welcoming and also very aesthetic (perfect photo place). The owner has such a kind soul and is always so nice to chat with. They carry food and drinks there, but also lots of other products. They have a lots of art hung up on their walls, and also carry lots of different local brands of jewelry, body care, and superfood powders. Also, they carry a bunch of different classes from yoga to cacao workshops to dance & movement classes. They honestly have EVERYTHING artistic there! Though, I know you're here to hear about their food and drinks. With their drinks, almost all of them you can make vegan. They have a couple different milk options that they'll rotate between, and she'll always be there to help you out if you don't know what to pick! I love getting the Maddie Hatter or the Brew Babe as both contain lots of healthy ingredients, while still being very sweet. They also carry fresh juices from Solstice Juice Co. which are typically always vegan. As for food, they carry quite a few different options! They're always switching it up, so I recommend just asking when you get there. Though, if their soup of the day is vegan, just get it. You. Won't. Regret. It. It's the best soup in town! Honestly, you just have to go in The Kommon to see how creative and loving it is.
